Freedom From Sugar

Betsy from Madison Heights, VA, asked:

Hi Julie,

How did you get off sugar? I am 74, physically fit, and a great eater until after dinner. That’s when the sugar cravings kick in.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Betsy

Hi Betsy,

What a fabulous question, especially during the holiday season when sweet treats seem to be everywhere. I still imagine sugarplum fairies dancing in my head, I just don’t let them enter my mouth anymore!

As I shared before, I’ve battled sugar addiction my entire life. If there was a plate of cookies in front of me, I didn’t just eat one, I ate 15 and still wanted more. It was as if I couldn’t stop! Research shows sugar is more addictive than cocaine.

Five years ago, I decided enough was enough. On April 1, 2019, I quit sugar for good, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Here’s how I did it:

  1. Clear the Temptation – I removed all candy, desserts, and refined foods from my home. Having them out of sight and reach made a huge difference.
  2. Fuel Your Brain – At every meal, I used Brain Octane Oil, a highly refined coconut oil that produces ketones, which the body doesn’t store as fat. The brain can operate on glucose or ketones, and switching to ketones seemed to eliminate my cravings for sugar. My dear friend, Dave Asprey, developed and introduced me to this product and it’s been a game-changer for me.
  3. Eat Whole Foods – My motto is, if God made it, I eat it. If it was made in a factory, I do my best to avoid it. I also supplement with vitamins and Beam Minerals (use julieryan at checkout for a 20% discount).
  4. Celebrate Progress – In the beginning, I tracked how many days I’d been “sugar sober.” Seeing my progress motivated me to keep going. By the time I reached five months, there was no way I was giving that up to start over.

Today, sugar doesn’t have a hold on me, and I feel so much better—mind, body, and spirit. I hope these tips help you as much as they’ve helped me. You’ve got this!

Hugs and Happy Holidays!

Julie
