Shadow’s Gentle Goodbye

Ruth from St. Louis, MO, asked:

Hi Julie,

Thank you so much for your service to humanity! I’ve learned so much about health and spirituality from your interviews and call-in show. My life has truly been transformed by listening, watching, and applying what I’ve learned from you.

Our 9-year-old beloved dog, Shadow, has struggled with mysterious health problems for the past year or two. After multiple vet visits, we finally received the heartbreaking diagnosis: cancer.

I’ve tried several natural healing approaches, including a session with one of your graduates, Missy, yet Shadow still isn’t doing well. According to her most recent vet appointment, the prognosis isn’t encouraging.

Is there any complementary care you’d recommend for a dog with cancer? Our family longs for more precious time with our sweet Shadow. And with cancer rates so high these days, I imagine many people could benefit from learning about holistic and spiritual approaches to support their beloved pets, too.

Thanks,

Ruth

Hi Ruth,

Thank you for your kind words and for sharing Shadow’s story. Our pets truly are family, and the bond we share with them is deeply spiritual. When illness appears, especially something as serious as cancer, it touches the hearts of everyone connected.

To get some guidance, I energetically connected to you and then from you to Shadow. Her spirit is out of her body and attached to her head (like the human Twelve Phases of Transition®) which means she’s in the end-of-life process. It’s important to remember that Shadow’s spirit is eternal, vibrant, and whole, no matter what is happening physically.

When I asked Shadow if she was ready to go, she said yes. She shared that she is in pain at times but just wants to be with you and her family. She also expressed that she doesn’t want to be euthanized.

Sometimes, our role is not to “fix” but to walk beside our beloved pets, offering love, comfort, and dignity. That presence is healing in itself.

Shadow knows how deeply she is loved. Trust that, however long her time, she will teach your family about resilience, unconditional love, and the soul’s eternal nature. Even when she eventually transitions, she will continue to be with you—just in a new and freer form.

Hope this information provides comfort to you and your family.

Hugs,

Julie

  1. Oh! I feel for Ruth and for all of Shadows’ family!! We lost our beloved little Sophie in 2020. We have not been able to get through our grief for her. I hope Ruth finds comfort in Julie’s words and that little Shadow stays close by. ❤️‍🩹

  2. This hits home. I listen to Ask Julie Ryan shows and interviews all the time. I have learned from the shows that we can communicate with our pets and that they are communicating with us too. I hope to take the intuitive training someday to be able communicate with pets and loved ones. I had just finished reading the Angelic Attendants book when our rescue dog had an “event” and began declining rapidly. The information in the book helped me make a decision to not have invasive tests and treatments and let her transition naturally at home. I swaddled her, sang to her and let her know she was loved. When I began reciting the Ho’oponopono prayer she relaxed and let go. It was a very powerful and moving experience and I don’t think I could have done that without all the “stuff” I’ve learned from Julie Ryan. Much love and appreciation for all that you do!

  3. I am curious why she didn’t want to be euthanized? The times we’ve had to do it, the vets encouraged us and said it was the right thing to do.

  4. Re:Shadow…..Thanks, so much, Julie. That’s just what we needed to hear. Deep down, I knew that she was probably on her way out. It’s so amazing how I can sense the love she has for our family and the love we have for her. Yes, we have learned so much from her. I will take the info that she does not want to be euthanized and hold it closely. We have a son who is working out of town until late October who loves her so much. I asked Shadow to wait for Stephen to leave. We will see how that works. Thanks for your help and comfort. It means so much! ❤️
