Julie Ryan

A Mystical Goodbye

Julie from Royal Oak, MI, asked:

Hi Julie,

When my father-in-law passed, we visited him at the nursing facility about an hour after his transition. I had never been present with someone who had just died before, and what I witnessed unsettled me.

I have had countless experiences sensing or seeing non-physical beings throughout my life, but what I saw that day felt different. In front of his face, I perceived a massive surge of energy, as if something, or someone, was actively working on him. It felt like multiple presences surrounded him. From across the room, I observed, curious yet wary. Then, I felt them become aware of my attention, and an unsettling sensation washed over me.

A wave of fear crept in because I didn’t understand what they were doing. Instinctively, I prayed, stepped back, and let go, feeling an inner nudge to do so. Still, the experience left me uneasy. It was overwhelming, beyond my understanding.

My father-in-law had Alzheimer’s and passed from complications of sepsis and C. diff. From what I was told, he should have been sent back to the hospital.

Was I witnessing a typical transition process, or was this something unusual?

Thanks,

Julie

Hi Julie,

What you witnessed was not unusual, though it may have felt intense. At the moment of transition, spiritual beings, including loved ones, guides, angels, and even pets, assist in the soul’s journey. The energy you saw was likely part of this sacred process, a moment beyond full human understanding.

Your unease may have stemmed from sensing a powerful, yet unfamiliar phenomenon. When we don’t understand something, fear can arise, triggering our body’s natural fight-or-flight response. In this state, clarity can fade as blood shifts from the brain and gut to the heart and extremities, preparing us to react.

To gain insight, I did an “instant replay” of your experience and, in my mind’s eye, saw several spirits of loved ones present not for your father-in-law (his spirit had already departed), but rather to comfort you and your family. The presences you sensed and the energy you saw around his face were their loving embrace. They wanted this heartbreaking moment to carry a mystical, spiritual element to reassure you that he was not alone and to strengthen your belief that he is now in Heaven.

Trust that your intuition guided you well. Your prayer and decision to step back allowed the process to unfold as it was meant to. Your father-in-law was surrounded by love then, just as he is now. Know that he is at peace and experiencing total joy.
